Stockroom program and Remote Desktop
« on: November 26, 2009, 03:06:41 pm »
I have a few questions about installing the Stockroom Inventory program to work over a RDT connection. We currnetly run an accounting package this way very successfully.
1. Can I install the Stockroom server and workstation programs on a 2003 server and configure it as a terminal server and then connect remotely and run the workstation program?
2. Can I use a handheld USB scanner at the remote location to upload to the workstation program running on the server?
3. Is there an issue with licenses? It seems the licenses for the workstation program would be ok but what about the batch portable device?
Any thoughts here would be appreciated. The current configuration is a VPN but we seem to be having many buggy connection problems with both the handheld and the remote workstation connection. Also it is very slow.
Thank you

1. We support Terminal Server so yes you can do this.

2. When you say USB scanner is this a tethered scanner or a portable scanner that is listed on our device support matrix?  If it is a tethered scanner then no you can not use it.  If it is a portable scanner that connects to a PC with a USB cord for the purpose of uploading and downloading data then yes you can use it.  However, you will need to have Microsoft Active Sync 4.5 on the PC you connect the scanner to.  The PC will also need to be able to access the computer running your SQL server and the computer running the license service.  Additionally, once the data has been uploaded you will still need to log into your terminal server and process the data using the Batch Synchronization Application.

3. You should not have any licesnsing issues with this setup as long as the Terminal Server can see the license server.  As for the portable we use a Web Service that was installed during the setup.  When a portable tries to upload data it will access this web service for a license.  If the portable can not access this web service or the web service can not access the license service then you will receive a licensing error on the portable and will not be able to upload more then 10 records.

As for your connection issues the DMS line of products which includes Stockroom was not designed to be used over wide area connections or VPN's.  There is not much you can do other then increase the amount of bandwidth that is available.

Hopefully this helps.

That's good news. The configuration I was thinking of was to install the Stockroom workstation program on the server which has the data as well as the license service running on it. Then I would connect the remote workstation using terminal services and run the Stockroom program. I could also leave the VPN active to allow the remote workstation and scanner to access the license services and sychronize the SQL database. Does this make sense and would the program run faster at the remote workstation than the current setup where the Stockroom program is running locally and connected to the server with only a VPN connection?

Yes this makes sense and yes the workstation will run faster then your current setup of having the workstation on a local computer and trying to access the database over your VPN.
